Investigation of Applicability Flowdrill Technology for Joining Thin-Walled Metal Sheets

The applicability of flowdrill technology to join steel and aluminum alloys is studied. When used two overlapped thin-walled materials, a joint formed as secondary effect. quality the resulting bushings forming interference fit was investigated by metallography. joints were using combination uncoated deep drawn steel, galvanized high-strength low alloy alloy, in different positions joint. Subsequently, tensile shear testing single performed. load-carrying capacity also tested with adhesive bonding. both technologies yields an increase dissipated energy at failure. bonded connection provides high maximum force failure, mechanical through leads displacement value thereby increasing area under loading curve. DC-Al showed highest capacity, up 9 kN, well dissipative energy, 10.3 J. fractured shearing inner bushing stress. failure surfaces exhibited typical ductile character dimpled morphology. It found that from point view joint, it advisable place material higher melting temperature upper position bonding results sealed load-bearing reduction risk crevice galvanic corrosion.
